Growing an Electrical business in San Diego.

An honest operator's guide for electricians: where the early work shows up in the public record, how to get found locally, and how to win more of the jobs you already chase. No growth hacks — just the channels that actually move a small shop.

01The San Diego market

Where Electrical work actually starts.

Most electricians in San Diego fight over the same shared-marketplace leads and the same referrals. The work that never hits those channels starts as a building permit: panel upgrades, subpanels, service upgrades and EV chargers. In the last 7 days the City of San Diego had 12 owner-pulled electrical job sites citywide (8 north of I-8, 4 south), measured 2026-08-13. Those are real counts from the public record, not projections.

02Find work before the bidding war

Read the permits the week they are filed.

When an individual files a electrical permit at their own property with no contractor named on it, that is a job at its earliest public moment. The City publishes every permit as free open data; the hard part is filtering out the companies and the permit runners so you are left with owners. That filter is the whole product here — an individual, one property, no contractor named on the permit — and you can see the Electrical volume by area or read real free samples before you trust a word of it.

A permit shows a fee was paid and a field is empty. It does not tell you the owner will hire out or who they have already called — so treat it as an early signal to reach out, not a promise of a job.

03Get found locally

The channels that compound for a local trade.

  • Google Business Profile. Complete it, pick the right Electrical categories, and keep photos of finished San Diego jobs current — it is the highest-intent free channel a local trade has.
  • Reviews, asked for every time. A steady trickle of recent, specific reviews beats a pile of old ones. Ask on the day the job passes final.
  • A site that names the work and the neighborhoods. Pages for the exact electrical scopes you do, in the parts of San Diego you cover, earn the searches the marketplaces resell back to you.
  • Referrals from adjacent trades. The other trades on a remodel see the job before you do; be the Electrical name they hand over.
04Close more of what you chase

Speed and proof win the early job.

On an early permit you are often first, so speed matters more than polish: reach out the week it is filed, reference the actual project, and make it easy to say yes. Because every lead here carries a permit number, you can quote it to SD Development Services or look it up in the City's open data — so your outreach is grounded in a real, checkable record rather than a cold list.

05The lead-cost math

Flat beats per-lead when the week is busy.

Per-lead marketplaces charge the most in your busiest month, because the bill follows the work. The average Angi pro pays about $401 a month in lead fees alone, which works out at $29.07 an Angi lead. This feed is $39 a month, flat, for every qualifying electrical job in your area — a busy week and a slow week cost the same, and there is a free tier so you can judge the quality first.

Angi figures here are our own arithmetic on Angi Inc's annual filing (Form 10-K for the year ended 31 December 2025), not prices Angi quotes — Angi publishes no rate card. US Lead revenue $587.05M ÷ 20,195,000 Leads = $29.07 a lead; ÷ 122,000 average monthly active pros = about $401 a month per pro on leads, $618 counting all of Angi's US revenue per pro. BBB complaint counts read 12 August 2026.
