Questions, answered plainly.
What Groundwork is, where the data comes from, what we will and will not claim about it, what it covers, and what it costs. Every answer is the same wording the rest of the site uses.
What is Groundwork?
Groundwork emails licensed San Diego contractors a weekly list of building-permit job sites — the street address, scope, valuation, permit number, a map link and a street-view link on every one. It is $39 a month, self-serve, and you can cancel in one click.
Where do the leads come from?
The public record. The City of San Diego publishes every development permit as free daily open data, and other San Diego-area cities publish their own permit portals. We read those sources, filter them, and email the results. Nothing is scraped from behind a login.
What does "owner-pulled" mean?
For the City of San Diego, every lead we sell is an individual, one property, no contractor named on the permit. That is what the public record supports and it is checkable, because the permit holder’s name is public. We say only what the filing shows and never anything about who the owner has or has not called.
How much does it cost?
$39 a month for one trade across the whole coverage area, delivered every Monday. A second trade is $10 more a month, and paying annually costs ten months instead of twelve. No setup fee, no per-lead charge, no contract — cancel in one click from any receipt.
Which trades do you cover?
Electrical, remodel / GC, plumbing and HVAC. Solar and roofing are measured and published on the statistics page but not sold: at roughly two qualifying jobs a week each citywide, they are too thin to be worth $39.
Which areas do you cover?
The City of San Diego, which you can buy as the whole city or split at Interstate 8 (north of I-8, or I-8 and south), plus several nearby cities and the unincorporated county. We do not cover the entire county, and every lead says which jurisdiction it is in. The full, current list is on the coverage page.
Do the leads include the owner’s phone number?
It depends on the source. In the unincorporated county the owner’s phone and e-mail are in the public permit record because the owner entered them on the application, so those ship as filed with a warning that no Do Not Call data exists for them. For City of San Diego paid leads we buy an owner-of-record lookup against the parcel and pass on what comes back — that is the owner on the assessment roll, usually but not always the person who filed the permit. The free tier carries no contact details, and we publish no hit rate because we have not measured one.
How is this different from Angi or Thumbtack?
Angi and Thumbtack are marketplaces that bill you per lead and pass a single request to several pros. Groundwork is a flat $39 a month with no per-lead charge and no membership fee, and the leads are public permit filings rather than shoppers who filled in a form. Which jobs are worth bidding is your call.
How and when are the leads delivered?
One email every Monday. The statistics behind it are recomputed weekly from the public record, and the pages you read never call a permit API on load — everything is precomputed and stored.
